Havanese Rescue, Inc. Newsletter Changing Lives...One Havanese At A Time
Nationals Special Edition

Words From The President

Summer is fading fast and autumn will soon be upon us. Before stepping forward to thoughts of beautiful colors, cooler evenings to cuddle with our Havies, football games and falling leaves, I want to share with you some of the happenings of the Havanese National Specialty that took place last month.

The Specialty was held in Denver over a period of five days; HRI was an invited guest to this event. Not only were we well represented, but we had a presence there that would have made anyone involved with Havanese Rescue Inc. fill with pride. Throughout the Specialty we did some educating about Havanese rescue, earned more funds, shared good laughter, and shed some tears of joy and pride.

Our Garden Helper quilt served as an exquisite backdrop to our rescue tables. Seeing firsthand the love sewn into each stitch of this masterpiece was humbling and inspiring. Jaws dropped and eyes widened as people stood and took it all in. Thank you to our selfless quilters for giving your gifts to our dogs. Your work was incredible!

Another highlight of this event was having four of our beloved rescues in attendance. They were beautiful representatives for us. The stories of these sweet souls were heard and hearts were opened because of them. It was a proud moment for us (and many tissues were needed to dry our eyes).

This was a wonderful experience and one that I hope each of you has the opportunity to take in at some time in the future. To be with people who have such loving huge hearts is unforgettable. During our last evening there we shared a group dinner, and the following week I received a wonderful email. This person wrote, "I cannot remember a time when I have been in the presence of people who enjoy each other's company so much."

Rescue is what we do, and all of us make it work like it does. Thank you for everything that you do and for playing such an important role in the lives of these little ones who come to us in need. I feel incredibly proud to be a part of this organization.

Four Havanese made HRI history by being our first former rescue dogs participating in the Parade of Rescues at the HCA National Specialty. Their trip around the ring brought tears to the eyes of much of the crowd who proudly watched these dogs and their moms take the floor.

Ebbie, Samantha, Henry and Roman all did a wonderful job representing our breed and our beautiful dogs in rescue. Their stories were shared by Liz Simon who MC'd the parade and each of us were reminded of the courageous steps the four took in learning to love and trust their new families.

HRI wants to thank the families of the four for bringing our beloved former foster dogs to the Havanese National Specialty. Thank you to Lee and Dale Podolon for making the trip to Denver with Ebbie, Sharon Martin for flying in with Samantha, Trude Bershoff who came with Henry and Pat Potter who brought Roman.

Photos were taken to commemorate the occasion. It was hard to pick just one for this newsletter! Be sure to look at the print publications, Our Havanese and the Havanese Hotline to see more coverage of HRI at the HCA National Specialty.

There were balloons, the fabulous quilt on display, touching videos of dogs rescued, prizes, laughter, and fun at the annual Havanese Rescue Inc party held at the HCA national specialty. "
Created by Ursula Bassolino and the HRI board on a "shoestring" because 'we don't want to take money from our dogs," the party was well attended, deeply appreciated, and greatly enjoyed by all and even included the dogs!

Thanks to all our donors who made the directed raffle a huge success!

Gerri Englemark-2 Havanese Pillows, a Handbag, a lacquer box and two photo albums; Ursula Bassolino-Havanese Pin; Fawski Feeder-Frank Woelfling; Two velvet leashes from Linda Gordon of Twisted Cow; Puppy whelping pad from Taylor Designed Pet Products; Rescue wine Jane and Paul Hohne; crystal Havanese sculpture on stand, and books from Joan and Clarke Ambrose; Vari-Kennel,custom pad and treats from Julie Vogel

Garden Helpers Quilt helps our Havanese in HRI

Audible admiration surrounded the beautiful Garden Quilt proudly displayed behind the HRI booth at the HCA National Specialty. Throughout the 3 days the quilt was displayed, many people made a trip to gaze at the talent and love so clearly presented in this quilt.

Deborah Rosenfield was the lucky winner of the drawing. Because she was not present at the drawing, the quilt was mailed to her. Her response in part was, "I just received the Garden Helpers quilt today and to say that it is STUNNING is an understatement."

The Garden Quilt raised $7,770 for the dogs of Havanese Rescue Inc. The support of the Havanese community is VERY much appreciated! Since HRI now averages one Havanese coming into rescue a week, those funds are sorely needed!

Did you love the quilt and want to get involved?

Work is going on now for the 2008 quilt with the theme Havanese Make Our World Go Round. This quilt is the first Havanese Rescue quilt that will include both blocks made with a pattern as well as individual one of a kind blocks. It's a perfect combination for individuals who like creating a block of their own as well as those individuals who think they can't create a block but know how to sew if only they have a pattern.

    Bistro

Look at how cute Bistro is now that his coat is growing back in!! Bistro is a fun loving 6 year old neutered male who is looking for his perfect family. At a svelte 25lbs, he's on the large size for a Havanese. He has that great Havanese personality. He is a very sweet, well mannered, happy dog that brings joy to whoever he meets. Bistro loves to romp and play with his toys and doesn't mind sharing them with other dogs. He also has a fondness for cats. Bistro passed his beginning obedience class with flying colors. He is house broken, crate trained, well socialized, micro-chipped, likes being groomed, and is UTD on shots. What more can a person want? Bistro is located in North Carolina .

    This & That

    LOST DOG UPDATE

As there was a recent lost puppy that HRI featured on our Amos Alert page, it is a good time to remind you to prepare for the unexpected. Please go to the website and work on your pet's poster today!

We've got a new (and terrific) addition to our Amos Alert page on our website.

Go to http://www.havanese rescue.com/ AAresources.html and look under the "Missing Pet Recovery Handbook" section on the right hand side. The new article is the last article linked there.

    How can YOU volunteer?

Please realize that you do not have to foster or transport a dog to help HRI!(Both those jobs are very important, however, so please let us know if you're interested and available!)

We can use assistance in so many areas, so think about the talents you have. You might be able to help make many more of HRI's Happy Endings.

One of our goals is to educate the public about Havanese and selecting a good breeder which means avoiding a puppy mill or backyard breeder. If you're interested, look around in your area and see if there are any pet expo's or if your local shelter puts on an event to educate the public. Contact HRI for information to include at such events and for help in finding posters and photos for your education booth.

    FREE MONEY for HRI!

Well, not quite, but there's a way YOU can help HRI raise money without spending even a penny! Here's how it works!

    Go to goodsearch.com

Look at the second box on the page that follows the words: "I'm supporting" and type in Havanese Rescue- HRI. Then click the button that says "Verify."

That's it! Each search generates a penny for HRI. If 100 people do two searches a day, that's $2.00 a day for HRI or $60 a month and it costs you nothing.

Searching through goodsearch.com does not sign you up for any spam or put you on a mailing list. It's just another search engine, this one sponsored by yahoo.

Curiosity really can pay off! Last month, HRI had it's biggest GoodSearch Month ever. Thanks to everyone who uses this option and raises money for our Havanese!
